Adolescence is not easy for the
gods
We sat together
at a conference in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the four young
stars of the new family adventure film from director Chris
Columbus, "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,"
young adults seemed normal, if not more beautiful than the
normal. They
played and produced and interrupting each other.
But on camera, made no
mistake, they were nothing beyond Extraordinary: All interepret
demigods, children of Greek and Roman gods.
And yet, as
Logan Lerman, 18, who plays Percy Jackson, son of the sea god
Poseidon with a mortal woman (Catherine Keener intrepret, being
itself a goddess), noted that the sense of humanity is the
essential point.
"That's what is so appealing in the film. We are high school students to normal,
with normal everyday problems, and even defects. That
and treated as a quality. "
Adapted from
the bestselling series of children's books of Rick Riordan's "Percy
Jackson" is the latest adaptation of a book with advanced
techniques of CGI that is made into a major studio and directed by
Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films
"Home Alone," "Goonies" and
other classic films of the family. The basic premise
of the book (and movie) are the amount of teenage descendents of
Greek gods that exist on Earth - along with Percy and Annabeth
(Alexandra Daddario), daughter of the goddess of wisdom, Athena,
Luke (Jake Abel), son of Hermes, and Grover (Brandon
T. Jackson), a satyr hoof that is protective of Percy and his
confidant. The group
joins when Zeus (played by Sean Bean) Percy accuses of stealing his
master spoke. The
clouds literally pile up in the sky, and the group must travel
together and their armed forces and achieve the master-ray back -
finding famous mythological characters such as Medusa (Uma Thurman)
and Persephone (Rosario Dawson). Oh and this is
happening in America today.
Columbus, who
confessed in a telephone interview that he felt ready to "retire
the green screen" after the Harry Potter movies, accepted
immediately the idea of mythological beings in the real
world.
"It's a really opotunidade to present this
world children," he said, "Greek myths and modern high
quality."
In a world so
done by CGI, you can imagine that most of the scenes were
predetermined, leaving little room for the actors, well, perform,
but this is not the case. When there are scenes of
design, the animators make small movies - "pre-view," they say -
that allows the cast and crew to imagine how the final product will
look like. But when to shoot, Columbus Allows the a
degree of improvisation.
Take for
example the scenes of sword fighting, which are many in "Percy
Jackson." Scenes can be thought of beforehand, and the actors can
be positioned in front of a green screen, but there is still room
to add other things. Fostering discussions emerged a spirit
among the four main actors on a duel between Lerman and
Abel. Apparently
Lerman, Abel and Columbus made a crucial sequence in the
script. "It will change all the time," Abel said of
the natual of the action scenes. "Months planning to
change the time," said Lerman, who added reverential "With Chris,
it's all a discovery."
One thing you notice, clearly, is how excited
the young stars were in Columbus to work with. While
the group ranges from young people aged up to 20-somethings
(Jackson did not say her age because, like James Dean, he finds
himself "immortal"), everyone loved the story of Columbus.
"You know,
Spielberg has kept him out of school for 'Gremlins'" Abel said
referring to the success of 80 years in Columbus. "My
childhood friends are really jealous because I'm working with him."
After Lerman said, "The last scene reminds me of 'Goonies'" The
fact is that this was released before he was born for sure.
Columbus offered praise back.
He laughed when asked about
his long list of movie for teenagers.
"It's probably
because it is the kind of stuff that attracts me - I enjoy working
with people who have not been discovered by the industry," he
said. "They have not
made many movies, so they're happy to cosneguir paper, the opposite
with old actors and exploited. Enthusiasm improves the
performances of them. They have been so excited to
work, which makes the set a much more creative, collaborative
living. "
The cast for the film began with Logan, that
Columbus saw in the 2007 movie "The Indomitable." "The
film was on his shoulders. He is the most talented
actor I've ever worked, "said Columbus. After finding
Percy, the focus shifted to find the right chemistry between Lerman
and the other actors. Jackson, who has a background in
comedy, proved to be right for the irreverent satyr, Grover.
Then came Abel and Luke - "Thank God we found him," Jackson
said, imitating the poor performace of other candidates.
Annabeth has proved most difficult for the cast
- her character is brave, one way through tough, but lovely.
Daddario, 23, said she had three weeks between the test for
the cast and the beginning of the recordings in Vancouver.
"It was a little crazy," she
admitted.
As the film is
based on a book series, opens the question of whether or not the
film will become a franchise. The stars, who began her first
promotional tour in San Francisco, said they could not wait to do
more movies "Percy Jackson". Columbus also said he is excited about
this pespectiva, even if the process can be exhausting.
"I'm very proud
of this movie, even if it has almost killed me. But I learned that sounds are those that
you are the blood that movies that are worth doing. "
And Percy
Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief opens Friday in
theaters.
In the epic action-adventure Avatar, James Cameron, director of Titanic, leads to a spectacular world, beyond our imagination. In the distant moon Pandora, a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, leading a heroic battle to save civilization. The film was conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when there were no means to realize their ideas. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR provides us with an innovative experience of total immersion in the movies, where the revolutionary technology that was invented to make the film dissolves in the emotion of the characters and sweeping story.
